What is Smudging?
Smudging is the ceremonial burning of sacred herbs or resins, such as Sage or Palo Santo. It originates from Native American traditions, used in order to help cleanse energies for spiritual health. It is believed to gain spiritual protection, purify the body and soul, as well as bring clarity to the mind. Smudging uses transmutation to help you transmit your intentions. Transmutation is the action of creating energy (such as fire), and changing it to another form (such as smoke).
healing properties
Palo Santo and Sage have antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, and serve as an excellent way to cleanse a space. Traditionally, it is used for "relieving common colds, flu symptoms, stress, asthma, headaches, anxiety, depression, inflammation, emotional pain and more" - Sacred Wood Essence. Additionally, Palo Santo aids in speeding up recovery from illness by interacting with the immune and nervous system, through it's calming properties.
Things you will need
- A Smudging tool such as Sage, or a cleansing stick such as Palo Santo! (Make sure if you are using herbs such as Sage, they are bundled, making for a slower burn).
- A lighter or match.
- A ceramic/glass plate, or a shell that can be used to hold or catch ash from your cleansing stick or sage bundle.
- A feather to help fan the smoke (optional).
How to smudge
- Grab your plate or shell and keep it close by.
- Set your intention. It can be to clear negative energy or to attract positive energy (love or gratitude).
- Get a flame burning and let it burn for about 30 seconds before blowing it out.
- Visualize your intention and wave your wand of smoke in circular motions, around the intended area of cleansing.
- When done, leave your smudging tool on your plate or shell. It should extinguish on its own, due to the natural oils.
- Just to be safe, make sure to keep your smudging tools out of reach from the little ones!
Smudging yourself
Starting at your heart, visualize your intention and begin waving your smudging tool in circular motions. Then, begin working your way down through your core to each leg and foot. Making sure to get all your limbs, work your way back up through your core and chest, then down each arm. Continue upwards, towards the crown of your head, then down towards your back body. Continue working down your back body, sort of creating a cocoon of smoke around you. When you finish, be sure to leave your smudging tool on your plate or shell. Your smudging tool should extinguish on it's own, due to it's natural oils.
